With a population of approximately twenty thousand, depending on the time of year, life here is tranquil. Garajonay National Park and its ancient laurel forest is at the heart of La Gomera The Island offers an exceptional infrastructure with very low traffic density and sufficient public transport to all major towns and villages. Medical and hospital facilities are readily available should you require them.
La Gomera consists of six municipalities each with its own unique landscape and traditions.
San Sebastian
San Sebastiánis the capital of La Gomera and the main commerce centre with its bustling Port, cafés and shops. The added bonus of beautiful volcanic black sandy beaches, with the luxury of never being crowded. The weather in San Sebastian is always a few degrees warmer than the Northern regions of the island.
This municipality stands out for its history linked to Christopher Colombus who stopped here on his way to the New World and fell in love.
Alajero
Alajero has a charming fishing village, Playa Santiago, developed as a tourist destination, on the south coast of La Gomera. La Gomera Airport is also located here. Surrounded by arid cliffs, the temperature is higher in this municipality.
Valle Gran Rey
Valle Gran Rey has some of the best beaches and attracts many tourists in the winter, especially Germans. Beautiful lush valleys leading down to the coast. Peppered with cafés, restaurants, organic shops and bicycles along the promenade and beaches. Whale and Dolphin watching from the harbour. Fabulous climate and sunsets. Each of the municipalities offers a unique landscape and experience. Serenity and peace.
ValleHermoso
Vallehermoso has a great diversity of landscapes from arid mountains to dense laurel forests. It’s the largest municipality on La Gomera. Famous for its Palm honey production and traditional agriculture. Perfect for hikers.
Agulo
Agulo is also known as the “bonbon of La Gomera” it’s a pretty picturesque little municipality on the North coast. The narrow cobbled streets with traditional houses and the breathtaking views across the sea to Tenerife and Mount Teide are delightful. The local economy is based on agricultural crops.
Hermigua
Hermigua located in the North East of the island reputedly has the best climate in the world, due to its mild temperature throughout the year. This lush green valley is full of fruit plantations, bananas, mangos and avocados. There are numerous hiking trails especially in the Garajonay National Park. Perfect for nature lovers. Famous for its traditional Gofio Mill. The Convent of San Pedro and the Ethnographic Museum are among the attractions. Hermigua is also known as “the green heart of La Gomera”.
